Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Lafayette public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Downtown recreation, senior and teen services
The original 1950s Community Center is at the end of its life and costs $500,000+ a year to patch up. The city will study replacing it, assess recreation needs, and is negotiating for land for playing fields, a dog park, and downtown parks.
Downtown mural program and the General Lafayette controversy
The Council replaced the December-only holiday display policy with a year-round policy allowing two cultural displays at a time, reviewed by the City Manager rather than the Council.
Volunteer recognition and commissions
The Commission is operating with four of seven seats filled. Council will consider appointing up to two new commissioners; options like shrinking to five or merging commissions were floated but aren't being pursued.
Memorial Day Recognition and Veterans Support
In the nation's 250th year, the city honored five fallen local service members and two WWII veterans, with Gold Star mothers sharing tributes. Veterans group leaders described the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Center's community role.
2026 Community Special Events
Both lanes of Golden Gate Way will close October 3, 2026, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., for the Rotary Club's Keep On Truckin event — with insurance and business notification required.
