Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Lafayette public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Zone Zero fire-safety landscaping rules in the Objective Design Standards
The city is writing the rules for what new multi-family and mixed-use buildings will look like — roof forms, window sizes, and how much glass a façade can have. Residents pushed for stricter rules to protect Lafayette's semi-rural character, and the Council lowered the glass limit to 35% and restricted shed roofs before introducing the ordinance.
SB 894: wildfire resilience loan program
The Council quietly approved $48,500 in Measure H sales tax money for wildfire preparedness projects on the consent calendar.
K-9 program restored
Lafayette police have a canine again after more than four years. Elwood, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois named for a fallen Pittsburg officer, will do patrol work, school and event safety sweeps, and explosive detection after upcoming training — and saves the city money it used to pay other agencies for those services.
Wildfire Liability Reform — Local Cost Recovery at Risk
Pending legislation (including SB 254's proposed $18 billion supplemental wildfire fund) could limit cities' ability to bill utilities when utility-caused fires destroy public infrastructure. Lafayette authorized its city manager to voice concern — and oppose the bill if local cost recovery isn't protected.
Domestic and Teen Dating Violence Awareness
Two Girl Scouts asked the council to display awareness posters in October, promote teen dating violence awareness in February, and partner with organizations like STAND to better support survivors.
State Legislation: E-Bike Regulation and Wildfire Mitigation
Vice Mayor McCormick reported on a statewide e-bike safety roundtable; a San Diego County pilot banning e-bikes for kids under 12 is the only measure showing results, and he wants the state to expand it faster.
SB 876: fire insurance and post-disaster rebuilding
A planning commissioner warned that if a Palisades-scale fire hit Lafayette, the city has no process to handle thousands of rebuild applications. The idea of a joint Planning/Emergency Preparedness Commission session was floated.
School crossing safety and city/school district responsibilities
Two crossing guard positions at First & Monroe and Reliez & Springhill are being restored for one year at about $42K, with councilmembers urging longer-term funding solutions.
2025 Police Department Performance
Crime is down, traffic enforcement is up, and Lafayette has gone four straight years without a traffic fatality. The department is shifting from education to enforcement on e-bikes and e-scooters.
Downtown Burglaries and Business Security
Vice Mayor McCormick reported recent break-ins at Cresco Rents and Wear Design Jewelry. The Crime Prevention Commission, Chamber, and police are organizing a downtown business walk-through and security assessments.
